THIS  EDITION WAS  PUBLISHED IN SEPTEMBER 1917,

HOPE THIS GIVES YOU A TASTER OF THE THINGS THEY READ ,

AND WAS WRITTEN ABOUT THEM.........................................

SO IMAGINE MY  COMPLETE SURPRISE WHEN I GOT THIS GAZETTE,

SHOWN ABOVE,A WHILE BACK AND  I FOUND THIS TYPED COPY ,

TUCKED IN BTWEEN THE LAST 2 PAGES,

TITLED THE R N D ALPHABET.

AS  SHOWN ON THE LEFT,

AND BELOW ,

HOW AN  RND  DITTY GOT THERE NO ONE TODAY KNOWS,

I MOST CERTAINLY DONT,,

BUT I SUSPECT ITS BEEN THERE FOR A VERY LONG TIME,

JUDGING BY THE FOXING MARKS ALL OVER THE PAPER,

BY THIS TIME THE R N D WAS UNDER ARMY CONTROL,

AND I DO KNOW THEY TRIED TO KNOCK ALL NAVAL TRADITTIONS,

OUT OF THEM,

WITHOUT SUCCSESS,

PERHAPS THIS WAS A CONCIOUS  DIG AT AUTHOURITY,

WHO KNOWS ???

ON THE LEFT  IS THE HEADER FROM A WW1 MAGAZINE ,

CALLED  THE SQUAD  20 GAZETTE,

THE  BACK GROUND ON THIS IS ,

SQUADRON 20 WERE A  R N A S (ROYAL NAVAL AIR SERVICE)

UNIT TASKED WITH DOING DEVELOPMENT WORK ON ARMOURED CARS AND TANKS, THEY WERE AS IT SAYS BASED,

AT WEMBLEY EXPERIMENTAL GROUND LONDON,

THIS PUBLICATION WAS ONLY CIRCULATED WITHIN THE SQUADRON, PERSONNEL,

THE COLLAGE  OF IMAGES ABOVE AND TO THE RIGHT,

SHOW A TRENCH ART MATCH CASE,

THE STRIKING AREA IS SHOWN ON THE RIGHT HAND IMAGE,

WHAT MAKES THIS ONE SPECIAL,

IS THAT IT WAS ORIGINALLY  ENGRAVED WITH  R N D  1914,

THE WORD OR WORDS IN THE CENTRE HAVE LONG SINCE BEEN POLISHED AWAY ,

AT LEAST THE UNIT AND YEAR  ENGRAVINGS SURVIVE.
